An Unforgettable Journey Through Outback Queensland

G'day! Phil here, ready to spill the beans on our recent jaunt through Outback Queensland. Picture this: a bunch of adventurous souls, a trusty coach, and more laughs than you can poke a stick at. Let's dive right into the wild and wonderful world of our Outback escapade!

So, why did we choose Outback Queensland?

Well, it's simple, really. I've always had a soft spot for the outback. There’s something about red dirt and wide open spaces that really gets me excited. Not to mention, it’s also where a fair chunk of my family are originally from. So, after hearing that it was on a few of our passengers' bucket lists, it was a no brainer, we had to make it happen!

Embracing the Road Less Travelled

With some careful planning and 27 bums on seats, we were off. We kicked things off, leaving Dubbo and heading to Charleville, where we set up camp for a couple great nights. From there we hit the road and made our way to Quilpie via some quirky spots like Cooladie and the Fox Trap Roadhouse - population two! Talk about some remote pitstops.

Bridsville was next on the agenda. We settled in at the iconic Birdsville Hotel and caught a mesmerising sunset from the iconic Big Red sand dune. Then it was off along the Birdsville Track with a Hamburger lunch at Mungerannie Pub before arriving in Marree. Down the Oodnadatta Track to William Creek for two nights and some scenic flights.

A Bird’s-Eye View

Imagine soaring high above Lake Eyre and the Painted Hills, witnessing the water flowing where you’d least expect it. Some passengers even took to the skies from Birdsville for an outback aerial spectacular - talk about getting a bird’s-eye view!

We then headed to Leigh Creek, a once flourishing mining town, now nearly deserted. It was here that things started to get interesting.

Embracing Change…

Life in the outback is all about rolling with the punches, and that's precisely what we did when mother nature decided to throw a curveball our way. Rainfall led to the closure of the Strzelecki Track, denying us access to Innamincka and Tibooburra. But hey, that's the beauty of outback life—being flexible and open to change. Undeterred, we swiftly adapted our plans and embarked on new adventures. Our journey took us to Wilpena Pound and Broken Hill, each offering its own unique charm and hidden surprises. Unexpected detours turned into cherished memories, reminding us that the outback always has something special up its sleeve.

Unforgettable Locals

During the trip we had the pleasure of meeting many remarkable locals - each one so friendly and welcoming. These folks truly embody the spirit of the outback, and their warm hospitality left an indelible mark on our hearts. We immersed ourselves in their vibrant communities, eagerly swapping stories and sharing laughter that reverberated through the vast expanse of red dirt.

Among the unforgettable characters we encountered was Trevor Wright, a true master of storytelling from Wrights Air in William Creek. His tales had us doubled over with laughter, painting vivid pictures of outback life. And let me tell you, the comedic timing of the lady at the Marree Roadhouse could rival even the most seasoned stand-up comedian! These encounters with the locals added an extra layer of richness to our outback experience, creating memories that will stay with us for a lifetime.

Landscapes, Lodging and Luscious Tucker

The Australian outback is one like no other. The sheer expanse of land, dotted with small communities, fosters a sense of camaraderie and resilience that leaves a lasting impression.

Being in the Outback, accommodation takes many different shapes and forms. You won't find opulent 5-star luxury here, but what you will discover are unique havens that exude character and charm. From cosy hotels to “rustic” dongas and even an underground motel, each lodging has its own distinct personality.

And when it's time to indulge in some food, you won't be disappointed. The outback serves up hearty meals that warm your belly and bring a smile to your face. Just know, most places require you to pre order meals before arriving and trying to remember what you ordered some days ahead can be challenging. Thankfully we had my wife on board who made note of all our choices and could give us all a gentle reminder.
